Waterfall is the name of the first band I was ever in, when I was about 17 in 1992. Richard Skelton, who drummed in Texas Galaxy years later, was the drummer, and another guy Paul on bass. We did one gig (which consisted of one song) and we weren’t very good. Just kids messing about really. At that time I was very influenced by both the Beatles and the “shoegazing” bands of the era, like Ride or My Bloody Valentine. The songs I had were kind of a mix between the two, and while naïve, I always found them interesting. We never recorded them but I remembered them always and had a few on bedroom-recorded demos.
The point of this Waterfall project was to record them in the fashion I always imagined they would sound, using the experience I had gotten in the studio to do them justice. But with one rule: Do them as they were written in 1992, without adding anything or changing the lyrics. And in doing so I made these songs which I find very enjoyable in their youthful, totally innocent way. Nothing too serious here, and nothing that would sound like what I would end up doing later (with the exception of maybe Lavender and Dr Jacob). It also gave me a chance to explore different soundscapes and arrangements that I wouldn’t normally use.
There were more songs from this era but they are buried away on tapes and I have no idea where they are. If I do manage to find the tapes I’ll record the songs, and try to do them justice. In the meantime hope you enjoy them and take them with a pinch of salt!
