About
The
Album

Going further back in time, this is another nostalgia album for me; old songs recently recorded, like the "Waterfall" and "1995" albums. This one has songs that go back as early as 1992, so there's a bit of a crossover with the Waterfall material, although style-wise they are very different.

I kept the same studio approach as when I recorded "1995" so this can be seen as a companion piece to that album. The songs are probably a little more basic than the 1995 ones, but share a similar outlook and style. Lovelorn, melancholic, short and simple. Production-wise I did keep it reasonably straightforward but of course couldn't resist the odd touch like the timpani-and-strings fest of "You Never Noticed" and the massed harmonies on "Jude". They are moments I quite enjoy.

I remember at the time (92/93) being quite keen on the idea of minimalism in music, just pure music played with very little embellishments - punk but on acoustic instruments. I wanted to make a whole album with just one acoustic guitar, bass and drums. That probably would've been a bit boring in the end but I kept that philospohy in mind for certain tracks here, namely "She Loved Me Once" and "What I Have To Do". The latter song always feels for me like where it all started, regarding my songwriting. It felt like my first real song, more so than the Waterfall material which was about sound and effects pedals. But that song set me up for my whole 'career'. Interesting that its the last song on the album.

As for the name of the album, it was actually on a shortlist of band names I had at the time, so I thought it was suitable to use here!
