About
The
Album

Finally its here: "Signals". Although I’ve been recording plenty of solo music recently as part of the Projects, over the last six years I’ve been mostly concentrating on the rock n’ roll side of things, with albums like "Rise", "Mob" and "Fix Your Head". So this album represents the true follow up to 2004’s "Painted In The Sky" as it’s a 'Robert Crosbie' album, rather than a 'Texas Galaxy' one. Its been over a year in the making which is the longest I’ve spent recording an album (even though I made a couple of others albums in the meantime).

This is probably my most personal album yet. What I wanted to write about was the feelings and memories associated with where I’m from and where I live, which is a beautiful part of Dublin by the sea; I wanted to convey that in the songs. So lyrically there are shared themes, and it could almost be a concept album. Cool. Musically what I went for (and hopefully achieved) was an epic, windswept sound, rooted in acoustic guitar / bass / drums but with lots of effects, organs, pianos, and washes of noise swirling around, to evoke the swell of the ocean, the snap of the wind, and also the calmness of the sea on a dreamy summer’s day. "How Much Of The Ocean" and "Wish" convey both of these points in different ways.

The songs are quite long, usually over four minutes, and only two of them you could really call upbeat – "Coming Home" could be the single if such things mattered, and "Celestial Sky" is a semi-instrumental jam that was inspired by both bands like Neu! and Salvatore as well as 60’s psychedelia.

The most unusual track (for me) is probably "To The Sun" as it gave me the chance to approach a song in a different way, with its electronic backing and various sections, eventually arriving at the big rock finale. And "Signals", the title track, is almost ambient, featuring pulses of sound and some delicate piano and guitar, and is similar to my work as Geisha. Finally "Fall Into The Sea" is probably the track that best represents the whole approach of the album and is one of my best songs.

I’m glad its finally finished as it took so long to write and record, but I’m immensely proud of it and think its my most fully formed and best-produced album. Now I can get back to rocking with Texas Galaxy – and there’s always another album to finish…
