"Rise" was the start of a new approach for me, largely abandoning the acoustic and going for a heavier rock sound. The style was previously explored on "Union Songs" on tracks like "Lions" and "Ever Wonder". These songs were also the start of the Texas Galaxy years - we played and developed a lot of these songs with the band.
Ultimately it was more satisfying to play rock music, especially in a live setting, than going around the endless acoustic gig circuit (not that acoustic gigs aren't fun). Once I'd found the sound, featuring those chunky guitars as demonstrated quite nicely on the title track, it was easy then to move forward as I had a base on which to build on.
"Anything You Do", "I See The Panic", "Halo", and "Rise" would be the key songs from this period - although "The Herd" also got a fair run when it came to being played live and as a potential single or whatever (this is the original, first ever version. We did new version during our "major label demo" sessions, but I prefer this one). The blues were important at this time too - two blues songs ("Roll The Dice" and "Packaged Revolution") are on this album. The final version of "Lions" is here too - a total remake with a more funky beat and more laid back approach.
Vocally there's a lot of distortion and maybe some songs could do without it, but I like it and it makes the tracks even more raw and uncompromising. I wouldn't re-record them any differently, put it to you that way.
