About
The
Album
|
I completed this album, the second under the Geisha name, towards the end of last year, but I held off putting up until now as there was a lot of new music on the site in 2009. 2010 needs some representation too! So kicking us off is an album which I’ve failed to adequately classify – ambient trip hop? Downtempo electronica? Oh whatever.
Let me tell you, these tracks are hard to make. A lot of it is fluke. A lot of it is persistance trying to get it to sound the way you want. And a lot of it is accepting that what you wanted is unobtainable and you should let the track be what it is. That’s how I got through this album, I’d probably still be making it otherwise. Anyway, I think its some of the best music I’ve ever made, rock / non-rock or otherwise.
It follows on from the first Geisha album (“The Sounds Of Geisha”), the most notable difference being the inclusion of beats into the tracks. The deep basslines and guitar effects remain, but this time I wanted to add more organic elements, so there are lots of live pianos, electric pianos, and other instruments added into the mix to give it more feeling, warmth, and humanity.
That’s because the motif of this album is communication. Each track has some form of speech somewhere in there – whether its my own voice jumbled up, or a sample (like on “H20”, an old lady recounting her experiences in India as a child – isn’t that the coolest??). And if you’re wondering why “Mexico” has no speech in it, listen again. All will become apparent.
So much of my heart and soul goes into the making of this kind of music that I probably won’t attempt another Geisha album for a while. I started a new track a while ago but I was so bereft of ideas after this album, I just had to leave it. So please enjoy this one, there’s some interesting sounds here, and hopefully it takes you on a journey. If anything, its great to fall asleep to.
