This EP is the third Geisha project, which is actually a collaboration between me and an electronic music producer named Paul Meehan. I'd done various things with Paul over the years, including recording in his studio and making a few dance tracks, so it seemed natural to collaborate on more longterm project. So between the two of us we created this EP, which is nearly as long as an album (one or two more tracks would've done it!)
For a long time Paul has created some amazing sounds and for this he supplied samples, loops, sound effects, and weird noises. For me this was new and refreshing, as I wasn't sure what approach I wanted for the next Geisha record, nor did I have any musical ideas I could work on. Paul sent me a load of stuff which I was able to cut up and use in the tracks. In all cases here, the loops determined the tracks themselves; they formed the backdrop of the music, suggested the key, the tempo, the feel - so in many ways Paul created the bedrock of the music. I was then able to perform my parts over the samples, add the beats and basslines, and arrange and complete the tracks.
Musically, this EP is similar to the last Geisha album; the deep basslines, slow beats, electric pianos and backwards effects are all present. Paul's contributions add a new dimension to the Geisha sound, like the industrial backing of "Project Machine", or the bleeps and electronic chirps of "Sometimes..." and "I Thought...". The tracks mostly establish a theme before heading off in a different direction altogether.
These tracks all came together pretty quickly as I had good source material to work with, and who knows, maybe this collaboration will develop into a more regular arrangement. The great thing about Geisha music is that is can go anywhere; I do have an idea for an album with no beats on it at all...
